Each year Radio 2 holds a short story writing competition for children aged 5 - 13 called ‘500 Words’. Originally created by Chris Evans with his dream to get children excited about reading and writing, it gives children the opportunity to explore their talents and win their own height in books, books for their school, and an invite to visit the CBBC studios in two different age categories, 5 – 9 and 10 – 13.
We are pleased to announce that Archie W of 7OAA has made it through the first round of judging with his story ‘Childhood’, and is one of the 5000 entrants to make it through to the second round - a fantastic achievement in itself due to the phenomenal amount of submitted stories (last year the total reached 134,790).
The second round of judging is completed by trained professionals at The Reading Agency when 5000 will be shortlisted to just 50 in early May. Those 50 become finalists and will be put forward to be one of the 6 winners, 3 in each age category.
The competition culminates in a broadcast extravaganza of live music and sensational story-telling every summer, at a special venue, with this year’s being Windsor Castle on Friday 14th June.
We look forward to following Archie’s progress in the competition and hope you will join us in congratulating him in his efforts so far!
