Festive Food-raising

At HGSC the students and staff are always thinking of ways to utilise the festive season, and all the generosity that comes with it, in order to give back to the community.

This year is no exception as we have two year groups who have separately organised to collect items to go towards food banks as this is the time of year their services are most in demand.

This year Mrs Boyles and the Y8 students, within their tutor groups, have decided to help by putting together ‘reverse advent calendars’ where each student will bring in an item of non-perishable goods to add to their collection, such as tinned food and items in sealed packets, so at least one item is added to the box every day. All eight gift packages will be delivered to Doorways Derby, a charity providing food and clothing to vulnerable members of the city just in time for Christmas.

A bit closer to home, the Y11 students are collecting in the same way by doing their own reverse advent calendars within tutor groups. Their collected items will be delivered to Ray Street Food Bank in Heanor by Mrs McLeod and the Head Boy and Head Girl in the last week of term. Mrs Baugh has even made a pledge to match the amount of items donated by her tutor group! We look forward to seeing the collections grow over the coming weeks.
