KS4 & KS5 LEARNING OVERVIEW

AT KS4 we build on prior skills embedded at KS3 by developing students' comprehension in both listening and reading and their ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. Optimum use of TL in lesson delivery is key to success. There is now a need to build on students' independence and versatility to best prepare them for the new GCSE specification which requires students to respond spontaneously and in a less prescriptive format than previously at GCSE Level. Students are therefore encouraged to model and adapt written and spoken language to make it fit for purpose and Y10 language lessons actively encourage collaborative learning. Green questions and response time gives students the opportunity to build on prior learning and develop resilience and flexibility when dealing with unfamiliar material. This is of course underpinned by a deliberate addressing of grammar which, by enabling students to understand how the language works, allows them to develop the independence of expression needed to cope with the new language specification. Class time focuses on developing and supporting students' skills in the above four skill areas so that knowledge and understanding can become embedded. Students are conversant with exam success criteria and this is shared from the outset, with scope and opportunity for self assessment and target setting. Homework tasks - vocabulary learning, extended writing tasks and differentiated reading tasks all serve to consolidate and build upon the knowledge gathered in class. Modern Foreign Languages are currently timetabled 5 lessons per fortnight.

KS5 now sees a much clearer progression from the previous key stage with curriculum content following on and addressed in greater detail. Communication is a key skill to be developed and lessons continue to prioritise TL delivery to encourage maximum immersion and participation of students. The four skills are addressed in line with new specification requirements and students are required to study up to two works of literature and/or a film which will be critiqued in the TL. In order to address the demands of this aspect in particular, grammar - its understanding and application - retains a vital and pivotal role in language teaching at KS5.
