YEAR 7, 8 & 9
In English we focus upon developing skills in the three key areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Staff use a range of strategies to engage students in reading, writing and discussing fiction from the twenty-first, twentieth and pre-nineteenth century as well as media, non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts.
YEAR 10 & 11
In English the skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening are consolidated in Key Stage 4 and students prepare specifically for the AQA English papers in GCSE English literature and language.

APPROACH TO LEARNING - KS5 ENGLISH
In sixth form English lessons you will read and discuss texts in a seminar format. You may be asked to carry out research and presentations. There will be a mixture of whole group, independent and pair work. You will be asked to write extended essays and also shorter exam practice answers. In English Language, there is also a creative writing element.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE - YEAR 12:
Term 1 – Language methods, features and theories of Spoken language, language and gender, representation, accent and dialect
Term 2 – Language and power, accent and dialect, language and occupation, opinion article writing
Term 3 – Revision and start A-Level coursework (both pieces)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE - YEAR 13:
Term 1 – Coursework piece 1 (original writing) and coursework piece 2 (investigation), Language change and child language acquisition (speech)
Term 2 – Child language acquisition (writing), Language diversity (accent, dialect and English as a world language, revision of gender, power and occupation.
Term 3 – Revision for both papers, analytical and creative.
ENGLISH LITERATURE - YEAR 12:
Term 1– Othello and The Great Gatsby
Term 2 – Death of a Salesman and Keats' poetry
Term 3 – Revision and Coursework piece 1 (Feminist poetry)
ENGLISH LITERATURE - YEAR 13:
Term 1 – Unseen social protest extracts, The Handmaid's Tale and The Kite Runner
Term 2 – Coursework piece 2 (novel), Blake's poetry and revision of Keats and Death of a Salesman
Term 3 – Revision of Othello and all texts.
Year 7 Trip to The Harry Potter Studio Tour
The English department and Year 7 ventured from Heanor Gate to Hogwarts and The World of Harry Potter on the January immersion day.
We followed in Harry's footsteps, visiting the Great Hall, exploring behind the scenes, seeing the sets, costumes and special effects that bring the brilliant books to life.
