16-19 Tuition Fund – 2020/21
Heanor Gate Science College will use the 16 to 19 tuition fund to provide personalised support through small group tuition and additional tutorial sessions, for eligible 16 to 19 students in GCSE English, maths, and other level 2/3 vocational courses where learning has been disrupted by Covid-19. Eligible students will be those who had not achieved a grade 5 or above at GCSE in either English and/or maths, with priority given to those who did not achieve a GCSE grade 4.
The funding will be allocated to English, maths, and our beauty therapy departments initially. Tuition groups will comprise of no more than five students and the sessions will be scheduled in addition to the planned programme of study hours already timetabled for the academic year 2020/21. Tuition and additional support may be delivered using a blend of online and on-site sessions.
- Maths and English GCSE exam re-sit preparation for November 2020 and Summer 2020.
- Beauty therapy deferred assessment preparation.
- Beauty therapy knowledge catch-up sessions.
Tuition Support offered will be based on an individual needs assessment, the identification of an individual starting point, clear learning goals, expectations and outcomes. Existing systems will be used to track the usage of the fund and the impact it has on those students eligible. Support will be regularly reviewed and potentially modified, with a key review point being the November GCSE resit results day in January 2021.
Update following receipt of November 2020 resit results:
Of those students entered for GCSE Mathematics we saw 15 students out of the 24 entered achieve their targeted grade 4 or 5 during the November 2020 series.
Of those students entered for GCSE English we saw 3 students out of the 9 entered achieve their targeted grade 4 or 5 during the November 2020 series.
Following receipt of the November 2020 resit results we have re-evaluated the needs of individual students, adjusting their support accordingly. During the period of school closure students have continued to receive ‘live’ support and have all been subscribed to Hegarty maths. Upon our re-opening we will again review our use of the 16-19 Tuition Fund to support those learners who are eligible.
